Biography
Name: Matti Kinnunen
Nickname: Kinu, Keke, Ketku, Masi, Masa
Born: October 30, 1987
Hometown: Currently in Rovaniemi
More information
Started snowboarding: Spring of ’97.
Home ski area: Syötekeskus Ski Resort
First trick you’re really proud of: It was definitely the back flip. I learned it before the triples and it became a show-off trick for girls during elementary school.
Other sports: In summer, I do a lot of sports, including wake board, trampoline, Frisbee golf, basketball, skateboarding and bowling. During the winter, there’s not much time left other than to snowboard. But, I play chess online quite a bit.
Life philosophy: Don’t sweat the small stuff.
What keeps a man moving? Coffee, Battery and the desire to push the limits.
The most beautiful thing in the world? Having grown up in the forest, I have to say it’s the nature.
Idols? When it comes to skiers, it’s Travis Rice. When I was younger, it was always Pekka Vallin, because he was fast and at the top at the time in snowboarding.
How do you become a good snowboarder? Snowboard a lot with the desire to develop. For more, you can ask Peetu….
What is your opinion of the bag jump? I tested it a few times and it seemed fun, but some people say it doesn’t work well for snowboarding and it goes too far. But I don’t think so. I think it’s good you don’t have to land directly on ice and break your neck if you want to learn a new trick.
Finish the sentence: I dance the Finnish traditional Humppa dance … on Mondays.
Finland or the USA: I’ve never visited the US, but I would believe that I would say Finland anyway.
What things make you laugh? Vodka Battery – no seriously, there are some jokes we share among friends and they always make me laugh.
Coolest things right now? A good song and soon going to snowboard.
Favorite music: Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Jussi Syren and a bit of all kinds from rap to techno.
A trick that got you fired up when you saw it? The latest that comes to mind is the Travis’s new double-kill “That’s it, that’s all”.
Who is the world’s most beautiful woman? Megan Fox is quite beautiful.
Do snowboarders have groupies? I don’t exactly know what you mean – but yes, there is probably something like that around.
What does being part of the B-Unit mean to you? A really cool thing, and you can’t be without feeling great. Great gang and great spirit!
Favorite ski area: In Finland, Syötekeskus and Ruka. Abroad would be Hokkaido hills in Japan.
Best ski trip? Last spring’s trip to Japan was awesome.
Coolest powder run? Same trip, same place.
If the B-Unit was a band, what instrument would you be playing? I’d be playing the drums—it’s always for the toughest guy.
Ask yourself a good question – and give a good answer: Are you single? Yes – and looking!
How can you successfully combine school and snowboarding? Vuokatti’s Sports High School is a good example of this, but now I’ve got the next school in front of me.
How much Battery do you consume during a season? Probably a liter or two… per day.
Give a short comment about the other team members in the B-Unit: I’d say all are extremely good at snowboarding, no doubt about it. I’m ashamed to snowboard with the kids. Nice guys and a good party on the road.
How do you start to practice a new trick? It starts from inside the head. Then I get the chance to do it, slap my cheeks, and go for it!
What do you think about ALS ski show shown on channel TV5? A real, Finnish snowboarding program with a good pace. It’s the only show I’ve been watching constantly. Thumbs up.
How do you follow snowboarding? Internet, magazines and snowboarding movies. Live, of course, is best.
What’s your funniest story about snowboarding outfit fashion? Helmet covers.
The Olympics or back terrain? For me, it’s easier to do the back terrain.
Kimi Räikkönen or Heikki Sorsa? I don’t really like car sports – so Heikki wins.
What’s your relationship with electronics: It’s part of today. Nowadays, how could we live without electronics?
What do you do after a day of snowboarding? Normally, I focus on something relaxing with the guys or then spend time with my computer in my lap. Depends, of course, where we are.
How do you spend your time on the computer? Mail, Facebook, news, chess and poker.
Do you work out? Maybe I should start… ha, ha.
How much do you travel? Most of my time is on the road. But I don’t know how to be in one place either.
How is it worthwhile to spend your time and where do you hope to spend less time? Friends and family…. Less time could be spent on the computer.
Open Mic: Have fun on your sled and see you on the slopes.
