At the end of each motocross season the best riders in the world come together for the Motocross of Nations. And each year the Americans travel across the pond as the hot favorites because they have – what has been called – the best motocross riders in the world.

This end-of-season team event was held in Saint Jean d’Angely, France this year. Finland sent a team consisting of Antti Pyrhönen (MX1), Löde Söderberg (MX2) and Toni Ericsson (open class).

“This is my ninth Motocross of Nations, we have been successfull with 3 podium places in the past when I have been on the team. Too bad we lost Harri Kullas, probably our strongest rider, due to injury at a race in Finland a couple of weeks ago.”

“Instead of my regular black and yellow outfit I will ride in the Finnish blue & white color scheme this weekend. We are here to do well and defend the Finnish honor.”

Qualification and races

With 3 riders on each team the scores are made from the best 2 riders in each race. In qualification the riders went out once, on Sunday they all had two races. Of six results the best 5 count.

“My qualification went really well and after a good start I finished 12th in the MX1. I think I surprised a few people with my speed, from the first free practice. A great start of the biggest race of the year.”

Overnight heavy rains had changed the track a bit when the best riders lined up for the main event. In the first race Antti did a fantastic job and he finished 14th, in the last race of the day he had a mid-pack start and finished 23th.

“I am very proud of my Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s first race. My riding went very well, the lap times were good and I was able to fight hard with the top names putting in similar lap times.”

“This was the best team we could send to the Motocross of Nations after Harry was out with injury. Each of the team members did what he could against the best riders of the motocross scene. Toni scored two 32th positions and Löde 29th and 33th.”

MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS TEAM RESULTS: 1. USA, 26; 2. France, 39; 3. Australia, 44; 4. England, 46; 5. Belgium, 54; 17. Finland, 130
