- Name: Rico Tubbs
You would best describe your music as: Bass driven party music
Years in the business: 20
Read MoreHow did you get into DJ:ing: I was a massive music fan & collector but didn’t hear the sounds I wanted at the clubs. Then asked a friend to play at his club night – that went ok and the next one in 2 weeks from that was my own event.
Where does your artist name come from: Miami Vice Tv series – I always preferred the sidekicks to the main hero.
Greatest music related memory: Performing the song “tsingis khan” with an air guitar on a stove when I was 5.( stove was not on)
Greatest achievement outside music: Life outside music sounds alien…
Things you love in DJ:ing: There are practical things like having the chance to channel my passion for music, then there’s having the addiction of hearing new sounds to put in good use. In performing there is also the moment of near euphoria as a result of music and crowd interaction.
Worst part about DJ:ing: Travelling long distances with little sleep and not being able to have much social life during the weekends.
Best place to play: Any place with an open mindend crowd! If I had to pick a few favourites, I think Goodvibes Festival Australia , Glasto in UK & Shambhala in Canada are kind of unique.
How to stay motivated: By listening to a lot of music, different genres, new and old – it always inspires.
Craziest thing that has happened on a gig: Have to go back to times when I dj’d for Bomfunk Mc’s – Our tour manager almost tripped over Bill Clinton at the back stage.
Best thing to do after a long day’s work: Swim in a lake & sauna.
What would you do if you weren’t a DJ: I’d be an illustrator or graphic designer.
Future goals: Being able to keep making a living out of music.
Your favourite Battery Energy Drink: Battery Gingered.
Do you have a secret talent: Moving my ears.
Although named after a cop in Miami Vice, Rico Tubbs actually hails from the decidedly less sunkissed Finland.
Since the release of “Gangsters” and “Hip Rave Anthem” on Cheap Thrills it’s been non-stop – touring with the likes of deadmau5 , Fatboy Slim etc. and having played everywhere from L.A to Moscow to Sydney and London. The releases gained overwhelming support from the likes of Annie Mac, Sinden, Crookers, tipped by Annie Mac as “MASSIVE”, he hasn’t disappointed. With releases out on Steve Aokis “DIM MAK” , Laidback Lukes mighty “Mixmash” ,Trouble&Bass , T&A ,+ his own label “Bass = Win” big on the beatport charts, things are only getting bigger.
“If Tubbs isn’t manhandling some dance tent at a major festival in 2014, the world will be missing out.” – Junodownload
