- Name: Merika Sofia Enne
Hometown: Helsinki, Finland
Family: Mom, dad, 2 big sisters and my lil bro. I’m blessed with the best family!
If you were not a snowboarder, what would you be?
A professional adventurer.
But you are, so please tell when and why did you start snowboarding?
I started back in 1998 because downhill skiing was boring. When I found my way to the park some years later I was hooked!
When did you know a pro snowboarder is what you wanted to be?
My parents bought me my first season pass in 2004, and I decided to quit all my other hobbies. I guess I figured right away that I’d rather spend all my time snowboarding! But it was probably in 2011 when I figured that pro is what I wanted to be. I did well in the World Championships and got some confidence from that.
Greatest accomplishment as a snowboarder?
Learning good board control; it enables me ride a variety of terrain and learn new tricks. It’s also mandatory for stylish riding.
Best snowboarding memory?
The last two springs in Lapland have been the time of my life! Best buddies, good jumps, hips and rails and slushy snow after all the ice in the wintertime. Along with, a good feeling to my board after the long season and great events like Snowboarding Finnish Open, Battery Spring Break and Wappulounas.
One word to describe snowboarding?
If we asked your best friends to describe you with 3 words, what would those words be?
Spontaneous, adventurous, trustworthy
What is the longest time you haven’t been on your snowboard?
6 months after ACL surgery in 2010.
What are you doing when you are not on a snowboard?
I watch a lot of snowboarding movies and chill with my buddies. In the winter I use all my energy to snowboarding so the only other sport I do is yoga to keep my body limber. In the summertime I ride my bike, play golf, run trails, do a little bit of watersports and cruise around with a skateboard.
How many travel days do you get in a year?
Last couple of years it has been over 150. In 2015 I want to ride more in Finland and spend less time waiting at airports.
How was your 2014?
Season started off well with camps on the Glaciers with the national team. I felt really good on the board. In January I won my first big competition in Nanshan, China and made the finals in European Opens. I also went to the Olympics but injured my ankle in the practice, tried to ride with it and injured a part of my cartilage next to my ribs. It was a challenging time but it felt so fortunate to be able to ride again in the spring.
What’s going down in 2015?
I’m doing a few competitions but my main goal is to get some video footage outside the slopes. And ride more than ever.
What “keeps you going”, on top of Battery energy drinks of course?
The feeling when I stomp a new trick and seeing my best friends do the same. Passion to learn something new with my board, and pushing my limits further.
Which is your favorite Battery Energy Drink?
I prefer the Hydro. It’s so fresh and hydrating! As a mixer the OG!
